Prime Minister James Marape has reaffirmed his confidence in Papua New Guinea’s democratic system, saying he welcomes any challenge as a true test of leadership, following the filing of a new Vote of No Confidence Motion in Parliament.
In a press statement released today from the Office of the Prime Minister at Morauta House, Waigani, Mr Marape said the motion is a constitutional right — not a threat — and urged leaders to rise above fear and political manipulation.
“I welcome any challenge. This is not the first time Mr Peter O’Neill has challenged me, and it may not be the last,” Mr Marape said. “Since I left his government in April 2019 because I had no belief in his leadership, he has continued to pursue every possible political and legal means to unseat me. But I remain focused on governing and serving our people.”
The Prime Minister said he harbours no resentment toward the process, describing it as part of PNG’s democratic rhythm — one that strengthens the nation’s political maturity and tests the conscience of Parliament.
Since assuming office on 30 May 2019, Mr Marape has faced multiple political and legal challenges, including the 2020 Political Impasse, various court cases, and repeated attempts to destabilise his government. Despite these, he said, Papua New Guinea continues to advance.
“We faced politics in 2020, 2021, 2023, 2024 and now again in 2025. But through it all, our Government has stood firm,” he said. “We delivered the highest number of MPs returned for any party in a National General Election since the Somare Government in 1982. We have grown our country’s economy by over K50 billion since 2019. The records speak for themselves — in economic management, infrastructure delivery, and service expansion.”
Mr Marape urged Members of Parliament to act with conscience and integrity, saying freedom of choice is the true measure of democracy.
“Let Parliament decide freely. Let our democracy be tested honestly. If Members believe in change, they must do so with integrity and not inducement,” he said. “I remain committed to the service of our nation and to the will of Parliament.”
He concluded by reaffirming his focus on stability, growth, and the Government’s long-term vision for economic independence and national unity.
